Beyond a Diet: 10-Day Jump-Start Plan

food pictureWould you like to lose weight and have more energy?

If you want to immediately change how you look, feel, think, and sleep, change your diet and you will change your biochemistry. It’s simple and will be worth all the insignificant feelings of sacrifice and depravation.

A 10-Day Change That Will Make You Feel Great!

Let’s first try to understand why this might be of value to you and your health. The body is a system that is affected by many things, but especially diet, exercise, and food.  Let’s look at a simple example of how this works:

In the movie “Super Size Me” a normal healthy man with good health volunteers to eat only from fast food chains. Within 30 days blood test results showed high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and had the early stages of kidney failure.

On the other hand, when you eat very healthy in a short period of time you can feel much better. This concept of food, health, and biochemistry is not new. In 1930, Dr. Andrew Werber won a Nobel peace prize for his research on how viruses, bacteria, and cancer, could not grow when the blood pH is alkaline. This means eating lots of fruits and vegetables, less meat and processed foods. As you can see by this research the health of the body is greatly affected by what you eat.

Almost all fruits and vegetables make the blood more alkaline. Most protein foods, grain, and dairy products convert to push the blood ph more acidic. If you follow this concept, it will help your body naturally cleanse and detoxify itself and keep the alkalinity in the normal range. By regulating the blood pH, your health, energy, and vitality will greatly improve.

Jump-Start Plan

For the next 10 days, eat 80% of your diet as fruits and vegetables. The other 20% can be proteins and grains. This 80/20 ratio mimics natural blood chemistry where the blood pH is more alkaline. An easy way to think about this is having 8 portions of fruits and vegetables daily and 2 portions of proteins or grains. This type of diet stops inflammation, detoxifies cells, cleanses the blood and liver, and revitalizes the body energy. This can be done for long periods of time.

Your new best friends are anything green, orange, yellow, red, and purple. Foods with lots of color indicate lots of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are fabulous tasting and naturally sweet. Fruit and raw vegetables are an easy, on the go snack that can be found in any supermarket and already cut up and ready to enjoy. Vegetables are great raw, steamed, stir fried, and baked. You can eat tons of them, in all shapes and forms with minimal calorie intake. They keep for days in the refrigerator, reheat easily, and make great snacks that will truly satisfy hunger.

You can make this diet simple by eating lots of salads and vegetables for lunch and dinner. Even if you’re eating out in restaurants, I recommend ordering 2 sides of cooked vegetables and adding a little olive oil, salt, pepper and parmesan cheese to make them delicious. If you’re still hungry, add in a great salad.  I guarantee you will feel full and satisfied.

As hard as it seems in the beginning, the results and benefits of eating like this will be immediate. Quickly you will feel lighter, happier, and more clear-headed. After you have tried eating this way for a while you may consider a modified version of this diet as a permanent life style change.

5 Holiday Blues Busters

Happy Healthy Veggies

By the time Christmas and New Years have passed, most people have endured weeks of parties, rich foods, plenty of celebrating with friend and family, and also some good and bad emotional experiences. One year, so many people came into my clinic in tears after the holidays, that I thought that I should be serving Prozac Martinis. Many people do feel depressed and tired because weeks of partying and stress that can throw off the balance of your body.

The body has a yin-yang balance, where it is very strong and also very delicate. If your temperature goes up one degree, you have a fever. If you eat rich foods and drink more alcohol than normal, you will have pushed the pH of the body to an extremely acid state. This can make you feel very out of sorts, irritable, constipated, and depressed. Because the holidays are so busy, many people also stop exercising. Daily exercise is very regulating to the entire system and also helps stimulate all brain chemistry, especially serotonins and endorphins “the feel good” hormones.

Since the body has a very delicate balance of bio-chemistry and is very self regulating, it is important to get back to simple health routines as soon as the holidays are over. Start eating very simple foods, exercise every day, get plenty of sleep, and drink lots of water.

If you are feeling like you need a vacation, or need to see a shrink and detoxify your mind, try some of these simple steps to get back in balance.

Simple Steps to Recover From the Holidays

1.  If you want to fast track your way back to feeling great, have 80% of your diet      consist of fruits and vegetables.

2.  If you’ve stopped exercising because of the holidays, start back slowly. Just walking 3 miles a day at an elevated pass is enough to get your organs working to eliminate the toxic overload caused by all the rich foods and alcohol.

3.  Start drinking at least 2 liters of water a day and take very high doses of vitamin C (3000 – 6000mg) a day. This combination will help alkalize the blood pH, support proper elimination, and support liver and adrenal function.

4.  Exercise where your eyes will be exposed to morning light because serotonin (the happy brain hormones) are signaled to regulate as soon as the eyes see natural light.

5.  Get out in nature, take a walk in the woods or visit the ocean to revitalize your spirit and be grateful for your existence.

Boost Your Immune System and Have Plenty of Energy Through the Holidays

The immune system is the main line of defensive energy for the body. The strength of the immune response is what protects you from getting flu’s and colds. This system protects the body from invasion of all infectious microorganism such as, viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Every time someone sneezes, you are exposed to a cold or flu virus or bacteria. The strength of the immune system is what keeps you form getting sick.

What You Eat Really Does Matter

Much of immune response, the total health and energy of the body has to do with what you eat and drink. In the movie “Super Size Me”, the actor was required to eat junk food for one month. Within a month on junk food, the actor showed signs of liver, kidney failure, high cholesterol and early stages of diabetes. This is proof that what you eat really does matter. Keeping a regular exercise program and moderate lifestyle, is also very important.

How to Keep Your Energy High During the Holidays

During the Holidays, if you are going to stress the body with extra alcohol, sugar, and rich foods, follow these simple directions below to strengthen your immune system and gain energy during the Holidays.

1. Take 1000 to 5000 mg of vitamin C a day.

2. Get plenty of extra sleep.

3. Keep a regular exercise program going.

4. Drink 2 liters of water a day.

5. Take vitamins and minerals especially at night when the body repairs itself.

6. Take acidophilus and antioxidants daily.

7. Take extra vitamins when you drink alcohol and eat sweets.

8. The days you are eating many rich foods, drinking lots of alcohol, or are recovering from a hangover, plan to have at least 2 days of very simple diet with lots of water, fruits, vitamin C, extra vegetables, and fresh vegetable juices.

9. The holidays can be not only physically stressful, but sometimes very emotionally stressful as well. Those who are single can feel extra lonely and empty. Others with families can feel completely overwhelmed. The best solution for whatever your situation is to try to stay positive, watch funny movies, and enjoy the beauty of the Holidays. It is a time to give to others. Being grateful for whatever you are blessed with will make this time more enjoyable.

Remember, Happiness is Your Best Medicine.

4 Easy Steps To Boost Your Immune System

Happy Family

Implement the four simple steps below and you will quickly feel happier, energized and have a stronger functioning immune response.  You will also be less susceptible to flues and colds!

Exercise Outdoors

Over the years, many studies have shown how exercise can enhance your immune response by increasing blood flow to all your organs. Exercise  also signals the body to produce hormones, red bloods cells, immune fighter cells and starts all metabolic functioning (your engines running). To increase immune response and proper brain functioning, you must eat well, sleep well, take vitamins and natural supplements, and get outdoor exercise.

In Japan, there is a famous saying “if you have a problem, climb a mountain”. This works because brain chemistry, especially serotonin levels (the happy hormones) are stimulated and regulated when the eyes are exposed to natural sunlight. This means that if you want to be healthy and mentally happy, you must get up from behind your desk, get outside everyday, and go for at least a 20-minute walk.  Being out in nature is healing.

Take lots of Vitamin C

Dr. Linus Pauling, won a Noble Peace prize for his research on  “The Importance of Vitamin C and the Immune Response”.  His research emphasized taking high doses of Vitamin C to help immune response and alkalize the pH of the blood. If the blood pH is alkaline, (which means consumption of 70% fruits and vegetables daily), bacteria and viruses will not be able to survive. This research has been scientifically documented repeatedly.

For an adult, an average  daily dose could range from 1000-5000 mg. The amount depends  on your current health condition and what your life style is like. For a child it will be 50-500 mg depending on the age and weight of the child. I recommend a type of Vitamin C, called “Esters C”. This type of Vitamin C has been shown to actually enter into the cells directly, and have the most absorbency. Ester C, can be purchased at any Health Food Store, and is manufactured by many US companies.

The Importance of Sleep

All body repair work is done during the sleep cycles. The  body rejuvenates itself during sleep. When you are sleeping your body takes your minerals, vitamins, and amino acids, and uses them  to rebuild and restore tissues and organs. For this reason, I recommend taking vitamins at night.

In Chinese medicine, the time that you sleep depends on many things. It is recommended that sleeping time goes along with seasonal changes. This means that during the long hours of summer we go to bed late and get up early. In the fall season, we  should go to bed earlier and get up later. During winter, when there is the least amount of day light, your sleep cycles should be the longest. Winter is the time to get the most rest, restore the chi (body energy), and prepare for the up coming activity of spring.  Try to go to bed before you are exhausted.  You will feel more rested in the morning, and have much more energy throughout the day.

Eat 4-6 small meals a day to increase your energy

I recommend that you eat 4-6 (small) meals a day. By eating in this manner you will have more consistent energy throughout the day. It will help strengthen your immune system, support your energy, stabilize your blood sugar level, and will continuously nourish your body.  The intake of the proper amounts of nutrition and vitamins during the day, also help regulate brain function, calm the nervous system, support immune response and control healthy hormone production.

When you continue to implement the four simple steps, you will notice an immediate  increase in your total body energy. It will also increase your immune response,  T- cells production, and fighter cells that protect your body.

H1N1 Virus – Vaccine or No Vaccine?

imagesDo you fear the H1N1 flu virus?  In this blog posting I will share with you information to put the flu virus into perspective, create a better understanding of what is happening, so that you don’t have to be overwhelmed by fear. Knowledge, preparation, a healthy life style, and an understanding of how the body works can help us to eliminate fear. My goal is to give you information that will make you more at peace about this subject.

The SARS, Asian and Bird Flu Pandemics

Do you remember the SARS, Asian and Bird Flu pandemics? Every few years there is a new pandemic flu virus that has the potential to cause illness and death.  Every winter people are scared and terrorized by the possibilities of the consequences of these viruses.  For example, 3 years ago many people felt that the Bird Flu could turn into a pandemic, and that they will have to live in retreats without contact of the outside world.  For months it had a negative impact on the psyche of the people.  The poultry market sales also plummeted.  This was very scary ….  A few years earlier it was SARS. Travelers going to and from Asia were quarantined and detained.

H1N1 Flu Virus

Now we are dealing with the H1N1 flu virus and in reality, every year there are many flu viruses. They can have severe symptoms (like high fever, body aches, chills, vomiting) or just symptoms of a common cold. The problem is that the media makes them seem perhaps worse than they are.

I do not want to discount the existence and severity of flu viruses.  We just need a better understanding about how to take care of ourselves throughout the cold and flu seasons.

Do you need the H1N1 vaccine?
You might consider the vaccine as your best option this year when:
–    Your immune system is already compromised and you have health problems
–    You are pregnant
–    You work in an environment where you will have a lot of exposure such as hospitals and schools

If you live a healthy lifestyle you will have a naturally strong immune system that will be able to defend itself. There are also many natural cold and flu preventive and immune tonic formulas that are extremely effective, and safe for children as well.

Chinese Herbal Remedies
Herbs and herbal formulas have been used and perfected for thousands of years. Even “Ice Man” had antibiotics and anti viral herbs in his pouch!!

Ginseng, Astragalas and Chinese Mushrooms are some of the most famous immune tonic herbs.  Some of our patients have had their immune systems seriously compromised by chemotherapy.  We have done blood tests on these patients who are very immune compromised by the drugs. After taking prescribed herbal products and natural supplements we re-tested the patients and their immune panels showed after a few weeks that they reached normal ranges.

How to use Chinese Herbs and Supplements

We suggest that you support your immune system on a daily basis with Chinese herbs, high doses of vitamin C and D throughout the winter. Prevention is always your best Medicine.  At the first sign of a sore throat, flu or cold symptoms you can take Chinese herbal formulas. These formulas have been scientifically proven to have a natural antibiotic and anti-viral effect.  These products can be purchased at any Health Food Store or you can call my office for more information how to purchase these products.
